Back from Asia

theJCW is finally back in the States and getting back in the swing of things.
I have seen a great deal of inspiring cultural art throughout Thailand and Cambodia and hope to bring some of it into my future work. I'm saving all the pictures for myself and family, but this is a good example of some great temples in Cambodia.

"Lost in Space" - JCW custom Dunny

OK, here it is, thanks to the holiday weekend I finally got around to working on my first custom Dunny. Hopefully many more will follow. I also have a Munny lying around that needs some painting and will hopefully follow soon as well. Anyway, hope you like this tentacled alien attached to the poor spaceman's helmet.

Riding into the picture is the great Audio Lion. a huge lion exercising on a tiny red bike is a little emasculating so he always wears a mask....don't judge him!

On a side note: yes, this is the start of new characters appearing a minimum of 1 time a week, made it to 85, but no more time for daily posts:(

Canvas Buddy 4 - The Cosmic Knowledge Worm

This last weekend I had a chance to finish another 4x4 painting in my series of "Canvas buddies" that are based on my character sketches. Now that I am to number 4 I am having much more fun with Acrylics again and will most likely continue this series until my wall is full of the crazy creatures that invade my mind.

When I posted the last canvas buddy there was some interest in buying one. Since I only did one and I am trying to make a series collection I didn't want to sell it. Because of this I painted 2 at the same time this time around. Yes, BOTH are fully painted step by step, two paintings at once and I will be selling one.

#85 - Vinny "the shark" Anemone

Proof that even life under the sea has been affected by the housing crisis! This clownfish couple picked the wrong anemone to live with, Vinny doesn't like mortgage extensions and their time is up.

#84 - Zee "the Platypus" Murphy

Zee spends every evening signing the Monotreme blues. He's got no money, got no home, got no family, and looks like a duck but can't fly.
Will there be another one tomorrow, we will see...

Another day on the bus, another ink on the bus with great steadler triplus fineliner pens. Face is almost based off of brother in law, I wonder if he will notice I said that?

-Oh and in other news, today I had my instincts confirmed by yet another reliable source that character sketches will not really get me anywhere in terms of shirt design as they very rarely sell well. Oh well, I am not doing this for any reason other than to get my mind open more and have fun with a new style, I will continue with it anyway. I will never give in to the popular trend of pop-culture tees simply because they sell, I'll keep coming up with fresh new original ideas and whatever happens happens.

I can't say much about this character sketch right now, I feel like I am running out of time everyday and never get the chance to really get done the work I want/need to but I decided to try and stick out the characters until #100...stay tuned to see if it happens.. good thing I have some great staedler fineliner markers that stay working for such a long time;)

It's late, a sketch done to quick and I must admit my sins of using photoshop to add the white highlights. I wasn't about to even attempt it with markers, it's not that smooth of a bus ride. At Any rate, I am debating whether I want to make it to 100 or just take a big break from it and continue on and off.....oh books, why have I forsaken you?
-Next time you think you're on a relaxing drive through the woods of Northern Wisconsin watch out for a gigantic fuzzy elephant that has a taste for vans!!!! "Crunchy on the outside and chewy on the inside!

#78 - AgentGreen

Agent green may be a rodent, but he's such a good spy he can turn diamonds into liquid just by looking at them. For what purpose you ask? to find out you'll just have to follow his exploits someday when he is a major television series.
He was supposed to be names Agent Orange since he is orange, but since he is mixing chemicals it didn't seem appropriate.
Almost to 80 in character sketches, surprised to get one done today. my staedler markers are holding up excellent as always.

#77 - Szlubu

It's late but surprisingly I was able to finish a new character sketch today. Today's character is dedicated to my lovely wife of 3 years. Today was officially our 3rd anniversary as husband and wife. She is a great inspiration for me and gives me a lot of encouragement. Funny enough, today was not celebrated in the usual way, she is such a cool wife that when we came across tickets to see District 9 for the pre-screening, she decided that we should do that and celebrate on the weekend.

It has been a rough week so far. To much client work outside of regular work puts a toll on the daily bus sketch. Poochy here still found a way to get drawn within the last two days, hopefully the week will afford me at least two more...tomorrow doesn't look promising. So Thursday and Friday did not afford me the time to make two characters. However, from the span of both days, Marty has come to visit us. He comes in...style, and he knows where it's at. Best make friends with Marty before he brings the rest of his Mørbloks to earth.

And! it's another day to post the character of the weekday, or "inks on the bus" if you will. Today I realized that basically every other artist out there has at one point or another created something with an ampersand. So here it is, I have to be a real artist somehow!

This stink machine is the product of recycling a page I began a robot on that I didn't like and left it sitting for months. That is, until today, when my lack of ideas led me down the dangerous path where the idea is uncovered at the very end. Maybe all the lovely smells around the tracks today inspired the outcome?

Ok, I admit it, it was not my intention to make this guy both a baseball player and a pirate. Part way through the "peg-flipper" and other accessories I realized how baseball looking this was, and since this particular kind of mammal couldn't hold a baseball bat this particular handicap is perfect!

Good evening internets, sorry I betrayed you and didn't make a post yesterday, I was busy racing downtown after work on those blasted trains struggling to fit in the car and wondering how I will work on my daily character. Spent some time talking on the bus and took a train to meet some great people for dinner so my free time comes Saturday afternoon and I can post the end of the week character(s).
Iv'e always been a fan of everything nintendo and how every single hill, tree building all seems to have a face and a personality. I like to think of Chicago that way too. While I am still relatively new to the city and I mostly only paid attention to getting the hancock tower in there, It's fun to think of what each buildings personality would be.... strange thought? yes/no?

In case anyone noticed, I slept through my previous "ink on the bus" so today I decided to pick up where I left off on the start of a sketch I was going to do for Teefury as their "Devil bird" I will admit I did touch up the face a lot in photoshop. I worked on the face the most on the way home and luck would have it I had the worst driver and worse bus, suffice to say the ducks face looked more like an inkblot than a duck.

Throwing my hat into the Fury (Teefury)

For my missing Friday post I was instead working on my submission to the
"Furyous Omnibus 2 Thousand Nine" at Teefury. A monstrous teeshirt collab with artists that frequent the site.

I don't know how small it will appear of if it will even make it on the shirt but I decided to have some fun with it anyway.

#62 - Teachers pet

Today's post I will admit had a few tiny alterations in photoshop after the sketching, however it is 95 percent marker (pens). What kind of pens you ask? well Staedler Triplus Fineliner pens. I mention this because I am so sold on this brand of pens and so pleased with how they never seem to dry out and always make a smooth line that I want to advertise for them! Even beyond monetary gains (though that is nice) If you are looking for some smooth pens that work really well, even on a crazy bouncing old POS bus, these are it!
